J.S.Bach - Attributions

 

 

   Este disco é irritante.

 Fiquei tremendamente admirado com este título, num texto assinado  por David Wright, lí-o e logo entendí  o porquê, ficando, imediatamente solidário com seu autor.

 Lembrei-me da minha mocidade em que tocar ou ouvir a excução de um prelúdio sem seu necessário complemento (a fuga) seria mais que sacrilégio, seria idiotice ou, no mínimo doidivanice. Coletâneas então, nem se fala, nutria verdadero pavor a elas, como já falei demasiado neste assunto, vou evitá-lo por agora.
 Bem até entendo o desgosto do Sr. Wright, tem gente que pega um punhado de peças de um determinado compositor, põe tudo no liquidificador e pronto, tá feita a seleção musical, não é bem assim não é?

 Mas, o avançar dos anos nos abranda e, se hoje aceito como boas até as coletâneas mais esquisitas, uma intromissãozinha inoportuna de peças de formatos diversos, mesmo que de um mesmo autor, numa boa seleção, chega a não doer, quase nada! 

 No caso presente, a composição de todas as peças é atribuída ao mestre J.S. Bach, mas, esta atribuição não corresponde à realidade.                       

 No mais, este CD é espetacular, vamos ler na íntegra o comentário do Sr.Wright:

This disc is infuriating.

The super preludes and fugues are not played as a straight set but annoyingly interspersed with chorale preludes. This sort of thing has, regrettably, become a fashion. Could we imagine the movements of a Beethoven symphony being interspersed with movements from his string quartets. Christopher Herrick is a fine organist and the performances and sound is good but what a gaffe to arrange the programme like this. 

I have yet to find anyone who can offer any real justification for this approach.I love these preludes and fugues from the days when I was twelve and playing them on the super Father Willis organ at All Saints Church, Ryde. I think Herrick is too slow on the prelude in D minor and there is not enough space in the E minor prelude but, by now I have waded through six chorale preludes which should have put together later on the disc. He plays the chorale preludes beautifully, sometimes almost romantically, with an excellent registration and style. The Metzler organ is a good instrument.

I would politely ask Hyperion and others to note the points I have made about track sequence. The performances are good but the presentation is infuriating.
