- O meu avô dizia que seus avós contavam que, nos tempos das secas e dos grandes calores no sertão, eles faziam jiraus altos que ficavam acima das frondes e copas de certas árvores: - pitombeiras, cajazeiras, oiticicas, jucazeiros, canafístulas, paus-de-mocós, juazeiros, pereiros etc, onde pernoitavam; e que das copas dessas árvores levantava-se um frio às vezes tão intenso que os obrigava a descer antes de meia-noite!...
- É por isto que nas serras, cujas faldas são verdoengas, a frescura é permanente.
- E assim, moço, se os governos mandassem cobrir o Ceará de uma arborização dessas plantas que somente crescem no tempo que não chove, teríamos uma aerosfera frígida e, em consequência, um inverno permanente provindo do represamento e condensação dos baixos vapores aquosos do Atlântico, antes de chegarem à altura por onde passam as correntes dos ventos desenfreados e malditos, e serem por estes arrebatados nessas correrias medonhas e infrenes.
